Warner Bros. Games has finally announced the new expansion for Mortal Kombat 1, called Khaos Reigns, which is due to be released on September 24, 2024. This is an upcoming downloadable content pack that is going to bring six new playable characters into the fray, among whom are Ghostface from the movie series Scream and Conan the Barbarian, plus a new storyline that will flesh out the narrative campaign.
New Characters and Features
Upon its release, the Khaos Reigns expansion will bring along with it three new characters: Cyrax, Sektor, and Noob Saibot. This set of characters will come bundled with the previously revealed Kombat Pack 2 in the expansion. The other three—Ghostface, Terminator 2's T-1000, and Conan the Barbarian—are said to come at later dates. For now, no specific release dates for these other characters have been revealed. If preordered, DLC will give out early access for these characters alongside wedding Scorpion and Empress Mileena Exclusive Skins.
Among other innovations within it, the Khaos Reigns expansion will include Animalities from the older Mortal Kombat games. Characters can morph into an animal, allowing for special and unique ways of finishing an opponent. In effect, it makes killing opponents more interesting and exciting. With each playable character having their respective Animality, it becomes not only brutally fitting but also entertaining to finish off opponents.
The Story Behind Khaos Reigns
The events of Khaos Reigns take place immediately after those of Mortal Kombat 1, in which Fire God Liu Kang is threatened by an alternate timeline. At the head of this threat is the Titan Havik, who seeks to drop realms into chaos. Liu Kang needs to unite both friends and foes to fight this great danger or risk an anarchic New Era. A cinematic story mode that will have the players engaged, this is all about lore regarding Mortal Kombat classics that come with fresh twists.
Pricing and Availability
Khaos Reigns will come in at $49.99 on most platforms, while for the Nintendo Switch it will be $39.99. There is also a bundle of Khaos Reigns and Kombat Pack 1 for $59.99 that instantly unlocks all the previous DLC characters and skins to further flesh out any player's roster.
With the Khaos Reigns expansion, new characters, features, and a fast-paced storyline will be pumped into Mortal Kombat 1. On the addition of new fan-favorite characters and the return of some classic mechanics like Animalities, modders will finally get to flex their creative muscle.
