Some Xbox One Launch Models Unable to Install Firmware Updates

It appears that a subset of original Xbox One consoles from the 2013 launch are experiencing issues downloading and installing firmware updates. The problem seems to primarily affect consoles running older versions of the system software.

According to reports on the NeoGAF forum, as well as investigations by Digital Foundry, these affected Xbox One launch models cannot update their firmware via the internet or by using an offline USB installation method. Digital Foundry attempted to update three different original Xbox One units and found that two were running the "Fluent Design" dashboard introduced in 2017, while the third had a revision from 2018 - none were able to install updates.

The inability to update the firmware also prevents these consoles from connecting to Xbox Live, blocking access to online features such as multiplayer, downloading games, and receiving updates. It's important to note that this issue does not appear to be universal across all original Xbox One consoles, as newer models like the Xbox One S are not affected.

Microsoft has not yet provided an official statement on the matter. However, on July 30th, Jason Ronald, the Xbox VP of Gaming Devices & Ecosystem, revealed in a post on Twitter that the issues pertaining to Xbox One consoles still running an OS from November 2018 or older "have been resolved".

While the full scope of the problem remains unclear, the inability to update firmware on these launch models could potentially lead to further complications down the line. As the gaming industry continues to push towards a more digital-centric landscape, reliance on online connectivity and digital purchases becomes increasingly important.

In conclusion, a subset of original Xbox One consoles from 2013 are facing difficulties installing firmware updates, which in turn prevents them from connecting to Xbox Live and accessing online features. Microsoft has acknowledged the issue and stated that it has been resolved, but has not provided further details on the cause or the extent of the problem.
